The Greek Central Archaeological Council is to temporarily move the remains of 79 young men shackled at the wrist in a mass grave dating from the 7th Centry BC at a site on the southern coast of Athens.

The decision to remove the remains which were uncovered during the construction of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre,in Faliro, was made as a compromise between those calling for the permanent removal of the bones from the mass grave site and those who wanted to keep the site intact until more investigations are carried out.

Those who called for the removal of the bones have argued that the remains were getting damaged because their continued exposure to the elements.

The council plans to remove the remains in blocks that will be returned once the site has been thoroughly investigated.

The remains are thought to be those of victims who were on the wrong side of a power struggle in Ancient Athens.
