International football star Giorgios Karagounis visited Alphington Grammar School recently to support the fundraising appeal held by the students in order to rebuild a primary school in the bushfire affect area of Lakes Entrance.
The students used their initiative to organise a family fun night and invited Mr Karagounis to join them while in Australia. Mr Karagounis shared stories about his passion for soccer with the students, he talked about the sacrifices that he made to reach the top league and the resilience needed to bounce back from setbacks. After a Q&A, he signed memorabilia and toured the school’s new facilities.
The school’s sports captains presented Mr Karagounis with an Alphington sports top and, in exchange, he signed a soccer ball for the school to keep.

Alphington Grammar School Principal, Doctor Vivianne Nikou said, “The School was very privileged to have Mr Karagounis take time out of his busy schedule to support the students in their initiative.
“l am indeed very proud that our students are thinking beyond themselves and looking for ways they can make a difference . Many families have fond memories of the Lakes Entrance area as their holiday destination and wanted to support the rebuild of the primary school in particular”
The students raised $5000 in support of the Lions Club of the region.
