Brimbank Mayor Councillor Georgina Papafotiou called on the community to celebrate International Women’s Day to help create a more inclusive and gender-balanced world .

She said International Women’s day on Sunday, 8 March was a global celebration of the achievement of women in the social, economic, cultural and political fields.

“Gender equality is important for the whole community, it is not only a women’s issue. We know that communities thrive in a society where men and women are treated equally,” said Cr Papafotiou.

“To achieve real equality we must value and respect women – this includes valuing women’s diversity, differences and qualities.

“Council lives out its commitment to gender equality on a number of fronts – through advocating for change, partnering with government agencies and other organisations, and supporting those who are working for positive change in the community.

“We all have a part to play in striving for an equal world that is healthier, happier and a better place for all. … It is my honour to serve as a Brimbank Councillor alongside six other women out of 11 Councillors – as well as be part of a Council where more than half of the workforce is female,” Cr Papafotiou said.

She said the council welcomed passing of the Gender Equity Bill 2019 through the Victorian parliament last month.
