A resumption of clashes took place on Wednesday near Kastanies on the Greek border with Turkey as people on the Turkish side of the border threw lit pieces of wood, stones and petrol bombs on to Greece and also tried to tear down the border fence.

Greek forces working with combined EU forces responded with tear gas and struggled t to keep intact the border fence.

In Evros, 348 people were arrested for trying to enter Greece illegally. In all. the authorities have  so far prevented 44, 353 cases of unlawful entry into Greece.

Meanwhile, the Greek government has denied a New York Times report that Greece had a “secret site” on the border to hold and expel migrants who have surged into Greece.

According to the report: “the extrajudicial center is one of several tactics Greece is using to prevent a repeat of the 2015 migration crisis.”

Greek government spokesman Stelios Petsas said “there is nothing hidden.”

“There is no secret detention camp in Greece. ll matters related to guarding the borders, or involving security, are transparent. The constitution, Greek law and European regulations are in force,” said Mr Petsas.

The European Union executive’s chief, Ursula von der Leyen who is to visit Athens today is expected to raise the matter with Greek leaders.

The Globe Post news outlet said that in investigating the story the New York Times had analysed satellite images of the alleged site and had also interviewed a Syrian man who claimed he had been taken to the site close to the village of Poros near the border.

In a separate incident, on Wednesday, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Turkey’s ambassador to Greece Burak Ozugergin to explain why a speedboat deliberately rammed a Greek Coastal Guard vessel off the island of Kos damaging its stern in the process. The incident took place on Tuesday evening.
