The Cairnmillar Institute is offering free counselling in Greek by telephone or videoconferencing for Greek migrants and those whose mother tongue is Greek.

The programme which is partially funded by government was launched a month ago through the Cairnmillar Institute in Melbourne and has received the support of the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The programme offers a free counselling service in Greek by telephone and videoconferencing with a provisional psychologist, postgraduate student of clinical psychology.

The service will provide essential support to struggling individuals who may face difficulties such social isolation, anxiety, stress, difficulties in adjusting, alcohol and substance abuse, relationship issues, all of which can affect mental health and other important aspects of life.

The programme is available in Greek for the Greek community and does not require anyone to produce a medical certificate or letter from a doctor. It is simply a matter of calling (Freecall) 1800 391 393 to make an appointment with Ms Myrto (full name withheld).

Ms Myrto told Neos Kosmos the programme was available by telephone or videoconferencing according to each person’s preference.

“Especially in this period of the COVID-19 crisis, our psychological health must be at the centre of things. Access to psychological support is very important especially for those in need,” she said.

The Greek program was launched because of the need for such services to be offered in the mother tongue for those who did not find it easy to access to available services because of the language barrier, said Ms Myrto.
