This Wednesday marks the beginning National Reconciliation Week for 2020. This year’s theme is ‘In this Together’, which allows us as to assess what role we can play, as Greek Australians, on the journey towards reconciliation.

As Reconciliation Australia states, this week is indeed “a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.”

The Greek Community of Melbourne has released a statement indicating its pride regarding the close relationship it has with the First Nations people. It has stated an intent to strengthen these bonds in the months to come. “We stand by them and walk with them on their journey,” said the statement of the GCM.

In a show of solidarity, media releases of the GCM will include the aboriginal flag alongside the group’s emblem to acknowledge their just and rightful place in the history of our Nation.

The GCM urges members of the Greek community to get involved in any events to strengthen bonds and show solidarity.

We urge members of our Community to get involved in any way they see fit, as well as promoting and supporting the events organised throughout the week.
