Greece’s Government Spokesman Stelios Petsas told the local press that Greece will pay for the accommodation of tourists who test positive for COVID-19 during their visit.

Tourists will stay at hotels paid for by the Greek state.  “We have done it in the past and we will continue to do so,” he said , adding that Greece has been paying for the accommodation of those in quarantine in the country since borders were closed.

“Thousands of people have been through the quarantine process,” he said.

Testing is being conducted at the Athens International Airport. Following this, tourists are sent to a hotel for one night until the test results come through to decide whether they will undergo a relaxed seven-day quarantine or will be placed under strict monitoring for 14 days if they test negative.

He said that the Greek government expects fewer cases of tourists testing positive as the countries from where the tourists are coming have been heavily regulated.

“Our aim is to ensure the maximum safety for residents and tourists,” Mr Petsas said.

He did not clarify if the cost of food and medicine provided to visitors will also be funded by the state.

On 15 June, the first visitors will arrive to Greece.
