Speak Greek in March kicked off in 2015 to encourage greater use of the Greek language by young people.

Every year, Greek language learners are encouraged to use the language in March and beyond.

Students this year expressed what they love about being Greek with short videos. Despite the many submissions, St John’s College walked away with the first prize in the United Hellenic Education’s (UHE) ‘Speak Greek in March’ competition.

The school’s Year 5 and Year 6 students took part in the competition and uploaded their videos to the UHE’s social media.

St John’s College Principal Anna Urban said that the school was proud of the students’ entries.

Kleanthis Papadopoulos, Junior School Greek Teacher, said that youngsters were very excited to take part in the competition. “We discussed it in class in detail and how they could expand their thinking,” Mr Papadopoulos said. “It was nice to see the students thought process and reasons they feel Greek. We never thought we would win first prize and it really didn’t matter to us if we didn’t. The videos show that my students are very passionate about their Greek background and culture.”

The first prize is $1,000 which will go towards St John’s College Junior School Greek language program.
