Panagiotis Kone will return home to Greece in the coming days despite signing a two-year contract to join A-League newcomers Western United last year.

When the A-League season resumes on Friday, United will not feature as clubs work through their 14-day quarantine.

The Greek midfielder made 15 appearances for United in the club’s first season and scored two goals but will not be part of future games.

“The club thanks Panagiotis for his contributions on and off the pitch in our inaugural season,” Western United CEO Chris Pehlivanis said.

“We wish him all the best in his future, whether that be in football or other endeavours.

“He will forever be part of the club’s history as the first-ever signing.”

The former AEK, Fiorentina and Bologna player had arrived in Australia in March and had been impressed with everything he had seen in the city.

“I want to thank Western United for giving me the opportunity to be part of this club,” he said.

“I wish the best of luck to all the players, staff and members.”
