The situation at St Basil’s at Fawkner, Melbourne, is worsening with new cases of COVID-19. There are now 14 staff members and 38 residents, mainly Greek Australians, who have tested positive for coronavirus. Some of the residents with coronavirus have been hospitalised.

Kostas Kontis, President of St Basil’s Melbourne, said that the personnel are working hard to ensure the safety of the residents in the facility.

A meeting was planned with a Federal Government representative on Tuesday to decide upon the future handling of the situation.

St Basil’s falls under the aegis of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and the facility in question has 150 residents.

“Many of those who tested positive were asymptomatic,” Mr Kontis told Neos Kosmos, adding that the situation began after a staff member who did not have symptoms tested positive.

“Others who did have symptoms were not accepted by hospitals and this has saddened us.”

Mr Kontis said that Archbishop Makarios calls regularly to be informed of the situation.

“This virus is like a fire out of control which changes direction with the air. We do all we can,” he said.
