Two special ANZAC Day commemorative lectures will be given by Perth-based Dr John Yiannakis in Sydney and Melbourne next week.
While much has been written about Gallipoli, the role of Lemnos has been marginalised. Dr John Yiannakis looks at the marginalisation of the island of Lemnos in the discourse of Australia’s Gallipoli campaign.
As the Gallipoli centenary approaches, Dr Yiannakis’ Sydney presentation Anzacs and the Aegean: The Lemnos Heritage of Gallipoli, organised by the Greek Festival of Sydney, aims to demonstrate the importance of Lemnos to the entire Anzac campaign and to present the case for research to redress the under-representation of Lemnos in the history of Gallipoli and World War One.
The entry is free. The event will be held in English, on Wednesday 24 April, at 7.00 pm, at the Greek Community Club (206-210 Lakemba Street, Lakemba, Sydney). For more information, contact 02 9750 0440, or via email, at greekfestival2@goc.com.au
In Melbourne, Dr John Yiannakis will give the lecture Addressing the Lemnos Heritage of Gallipoli and the Forgotten Foundations of Anzac, 1915-1918.
This special Anzac Day event will be hosted by GOCMV, at the Wheeler Centre in Melbourne (176 Little Lonsdale St), on Thursday 25 April, at 7.00 pm.
