A Greek Australian woman in her 70s has died from COVID-19, lifting the number of deaths from within the Greek community of Melbourne to five.

St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner is mourning the death of the resident who is known to Neos Kosmos but whose name cannot be released at this point.

The Greek Australian aged care facility, 17km north of the CBD, has been battling with COVID-19 infections since the first tests came back positive more than a week ago.

There are currently 73 staff members and residents who have tested positive for COVID-19, and there are currently 48 residents and 27 members of staff who have caught the virus with a number of elderly in hospital.

On Wednesday, the home was asked to isolate with Commonwealth teams, including experts from Aspen Medical, called in to replace regular staff. The new team is working on infection control protocols.

In Victoria, at least 45 aged-care facilities have now reported outbreaks, and there are hundreds of positive cases in the sector overall (including among staff).
