Sotiris Tsiodras, the Sydney-born immunologist of Greece’s Department of Health, was one of the key orchestrators of Greece’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic during the lockdown stage.

For months, Greeks hung off his every word, as the pandemic unfolded until he bid them farewell at the end of May.

Since stepping away from the limelight, Greece has opened its borders to international travel and has noted a spike in COVID-19 cases and deaths in recent days. On Monday, Greece recorded 77 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths with figures steadily growing.

As a result, Mr Tsiodras has been called back to the spotlight to give a press conference regarding developments at 6pm Tuesday along with Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias.

The rise in cases has prompted the reaction of main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on monday. He accused the government of making successive mistakes and implementing an erratic policy in the management of the coronavirus. “They did everything wrong and we are back at point zero,” he wrote.
