Art Athina 2020, one of the largest annual art institutions in Greece, will be going online because the realtime event that was to have taken place at the Zappeion Hall in Athens was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The Greek capital’s international contemporary art fair will be available through its digital platform, the Art Athina Viewing Rooms, and will be presented online in the first week of October until the end of the month.

The galleries will present their digital booths on an easy-to-use platform that will also enable to display the works of the artists to the Greek and international viewing public.

The format will allow the visitor to zoom in on the works and gain more information about them. The format will also support video playback, audio installations and digital artwork.

There will be a separate platform on the main website for speeches delivered at the Art Athina. The programme will be curated by art historian Marina Fokidis.

“Live” conversations will be presented under the Talks programme and there may be an opportunity for question and answer sessions and public participation. Speakers that will include international artists, art historians and museum executives will be invited to take part in talks with Greek colleagues to share experiences and reflections on contemporary art through the context of new realities.

Also featured as part of the Art Athina lineup will be a performance programme of new productions and historical performances that will be presented under the supervision of Ms Fokidis.

The Video programme will include video works of artists selected in collaboration with a number of international institutions, art galleries, independent art venues and independent Greek and international artists. This will be curated by the artistic director of Art Athina, Stamatias Dimitrakopoulou.

The event will be combined with Art Athina Week which will be a week or events, from 8 to 15 October for Greek art galleries to digitally exhibit their art works.
