Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed 410 new cases of coronavirus and the deaths of 21 people due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the deadliest day yet. There are 16 deaths linked to aged care outbreaks.

Deaths mainly concerned the elderly with two females and one male in their 70s, six females and five males in their 80s, five males and one female in their 90s, and one female in her 100s.

Victoria has noted 267 deaths due to COVID-19, and the national toll is at 352.

The total number of active cases in aged care settings is currently at 1,929, whereas healthcare workers have also been affected with 1,079 active cases from the total of 7,877 active cases across the state of Victoria.

Another area of concern are the active cases in NDIS homes. Apart from cases in community residential disability accommodation services, there are also some 56 active cases in transfer homes.

Mr Andrews also noted his concern over cases popping up in regional Australia. “We have seen some increases of concern to us in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. They have been stable. They’re very low numbers, but coming off such a low base, any additional cases are of concern to us,” he said.

Victorian authorities warn the number of deaths would continue to rise bearing in mind the number of people hospitalised with the virus.
