Victoria has recorded 73 new COVID-19 cases overnight, making it the lowest number of new cases since 3 July.
The number of deaths recorded were at 41, the highest figure recorded so far – however only 8 were from the last 24 hours as 33 deaths were added from previous weeks leading up to 27 August which were reported to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) by aged care facilities yesterday.
“Today’s deaths total includes 22 people who died in the weeks leading up to 27 August and were reported to DHHS by aged care facilities yesterday,” Victoria’s Health Department said on Twitter this morning but this figure was later corrected by Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews.
“I can provide some break down to the group, 3 males and four females in their 70s, and one female in her 100s,” Mr Andrews said of the deaths over the last 24 hours.
At least 37 of the 41 deaths reported were linked to aged care facilities and outbreaks related to these.
