Greece’s Interior Ministry has changed the Code of Greek citizenship for foreigners wishing to be naturalized Greeks.

Foreigners wishing to obtain Greek citizenship will need to undergo written exams to prove their language skills as well as knowledge about Greek history, culture and systems of government.

Greek language level will be at B1 and will include writing and comprehension tests. The topics are randomly selected.

A passing grade of 80 per cent is required for the candidate to be considered successful to receive a Certificate of Adequacy of Naturalisation from the General Secretariat of Citizenship.

Greek secondary and tertiary students are exempt for the exams. For naturalisation, students will need to sit for an interview conducted by two employees of the Secretariat of Citizenship.

The exams will be held twice a year and will cost 250 euros and the request for naturalisation costs 550 euros.

The draft bill will be presented by the relevant Committee of Parliament on 1 October, 2020.
