The Foundation for Hellenic Studies in Adelaide is launching Gr2021 as the promotional platform for all community groups and individual organisations that want to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Greek independence in March next year.

A spokesperson for the foundation said Greek community and private would be able to promote their events on the Gr2021 website and Facebook pages. Once they have signed on, they will receive the latest news and announcements relating to the celebrations.

As part of the celebrations next year, the community will unveil a permanent memorial dedicated to Greek independence on Rose Street in Thebarton on 25 March.

The inaugural “By George!” Biennial Art Prize competition will be launched with a prize pool of $11,000 for the best works in canvas/paper and sculptures on the 2021 theme of Revolution – what independence means for the World. The works will be judged by a panel of well-known artists and critics and there will also be a Democratic (People’s) Choice award.

Subject to COVID-19 restrictions, members of the Greek Presidential Guard, the Evzones are expected in the city on ANZAC Day, April 25. A photographic exhibition, The Spirit of the Evzones, by Bourdo Photography will be held towards the end of April.

“Although based in South Australia, the Foundation for Hellenic Studies has a national reach and in the past has collaborated with organisations from around Australia in presenting events. We welcome collegiate cooperation, as the objective of this platform is to promote events that commemorate the 200 year anniversary” said Connie Kosti, the foundation’s media spokesperson.

“Working together, we can reach and attract more people. The Foundation will be including events that it has planned for 2021 on the platform but it is hoped that others will submit the details of their own events for inclusion on the platform, which we would welcome,” said Ms Kosti.
