Shakespeare’s play Othello is set to take a Hellenic twist with a Greek Australian actor in the show as well as a stage set both in Venice and Cyprus. Nicholas Papademetriou is set to star alongside a dynamic cast of characters to breathe new life into this Shakespearean classic.
Theatre company Sport For Jove will run a new season of Shakespeare’s classic Othello at Sydney’s Seymour Centre from June 14-29.
The production, set in Venice and Cyprus, is being adapted by the theatre company to explore modern day political tensions. With water as the main metaphor, the play deals with themes of marriage, love, sex, persuasion and the illusion of loyalty.
The stage production, directed by Matt Edgerton, continues Sport For Jove’s dedication to ‘colour-blind’ casting, leading to an outstanding and multicultural ensemble, which along with Papademetriou features: Ivan Donato, Julia Ohannessian, Amy Mathews, Anthony Gooley, Damien Ryan, Scott Sheridan and Isaro Kayitesi.
“The play is so much more than a study of racial prejudice,” says the director of Othello, “and it is interesting and exciting to examine audiences’ expectations and perceptions of the notion of ‘difference’.”
Othello will be on at the Seymour Centre, Corner of City Rd and Cleveland St Chippendale NSW 2008 from June 14-29. For bookings contact the Seymour Centre on (02) 9351 7940 or visit www.seymourcentre.com
