By the end of Saturday, there were 2835 new cases, along with 38 new deaths authorities announced while the number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic sits at 72,510.

In an effort to curb the aggressive Covid-19 spike, the government has decided to shut down elementary schools, kindergartens and day care centres starting Monday.

The new lockdown rules are to be implemented for a period of two weeks during which children will be schooled at home.

Moreover, authorities have enforced a 9 pm – 5 am curfew with failure to comply leading to arrests.

As part of the announced Covid-19 policy, symptomatic COVID-19 carriers and those with mild symptoms are advised to quarantine for a minimum of 10 days. The end of the quarantine must take place at least three days without fever and without taking anti-fever medication.

For people with heavier symptoms, the minimum quarantine period is 14-20 days, the latter for people with suppressed immune systems. The criteria for exiting quarantine are the same: 3 days without fever and without the help of medication.

At the same time, close contacts of people diagnosed with the coronavirus should quarantine for 14 days.

People who have been diagnosed with the new coronavirus must quarantine for a minimum 10-20 days, depending on the severity of their symptoms, according to updated guidelines by Greece’s National Public Health Organization (NPHO).

Meanwhile, Cyprus has also announced partial lockdowns in the towns of Limassol and Paphos to curb a surge in new Covid-19 cases. The local measures, which include a ban on travel into and out of the towns and a nightly curfew, will take effect from Thursday and last until the end of November.

Not far from Greece, in Spain, the death toll surged to over 40,000 with infections passing the 1.4 million mark, while the rate of new cases continued to grow, health ministry data showed. A further 349 people died in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 40,105 in Spain – the fourth-highest within the European Union after the United Kingdom, France and Italy.

Speaking of the latter, the total number of coronavirus cases registered in Italy since the start of the pandemic surpassed one million.

Neighbouring Turkey banned smoking in public places while seeking more effective ways to minimise the spread.
