Alex Hawke becomes the second minister of Hellenic heritage to take up the immigration portfolio after Kastellorizian Nick Bolkas in the ’90s.

The Liberal member for Mitchell (NSW), steps up in the position as per changes announced in the ministry lineup by Scott Morrison on Friday.

His Greek background stems from his mother’s side whose family migrated Down Under in 1953.

Mr Hawke’s role as minister for international development and the Pacific will be taken by Zed Seselja.

As part of the reshuffle, prompted by the retirement of former finance minister Mathias Cormann, the trade portfolio is also changing hands, with Dan Tehan – a former diplomat – replacing Simon Birmingham who will take over Mr Cormann’s role.

Alan Tudge, will adopt the Education minister role.

Among the big changes in the revamped ministry lineup, the aged care portfolio has been elevated to the cabinet, coming under the responsibilities of Health Minister Greg Hunt.

The move follows a year of widespread criticism targeting the role of Senator Richard Colbeck for the handling of the coronavirus crisis. Mr Colbeck remains minister for senior Australians and sport.
