“In Greece, it’s all about the food,” declares George Diakomichalis in episode one of his food and cultural odyssey It’s all Greek to me.
The renowned fourth- generation pastry chef from Adelaide’s Kalymnos Pastries has dedicated this program to promoting Greek culture in Australia through food and cultural content.
The first episode takes you through the migration story of Peter and Vicky, who for 40 years have lived in the same house and have created what George calls their personal ‘market garden’.
Peter sits proudly in his
garden as he explains tips and tools to get the perfect garden for the seasonal and fresh produce that Vicky uses as the inspiration for her home cooking. In the first episdoe, Vicky takes you through her recipe for pork stifado – a Greek home stew perfect for the winter months. And to say thanks, George cooks up his family recipe of bougatsa as a warming winter custard and semolina based dessert.
But the program isn’t all about the food – that becomes the catalyst of the conversation. Peter talks about migrating to Australia and meeting Vicky, the woman who would become his wife. The migration story is central to episode one, as whilst watching you think about your own family’s story of immigrating to the Antipodes.
George’s business Kalymnos Pastries has been up-and-running for nearly 20 years and features all the Greek classic delicacies like kataifi, revani, baklava, floyeres, karithopita, bougatsa – the list goes on. Cheesecakes, muffins and biscuits can also be found on the premises, ensuring there is something available for everyone’s sweet tooth. But if savoury’s your flavour, try the spanakopita, tiropita and vegetable and cheese triangles. Kalymnos Pastries is a reflection of George’s vision and heritage.
“We want everyone to experience the tradition of the food, like people are eating home cooked food from their parents and grandparents. We are very proud of the home style produce.”
