A study conducted from 22-24 January found that 7 out of 10 of the 1,115 Greek women surveyed have been victim of sexual harassment or abuse.

The survey, conducted by market research company Prorata, found that 58 per cent of the cases  took place at women’s place of work. Cases also took place on the street (53 per cent) in a house (35 per cent), in an entertainment facility (30 per cent), at school or university (28 per cent) and on social media (23 per cent).

An overwhelming majority – 87 per cent of women questioned – said that it is not “easy” or “not particular easy” for a victim to find justice. Asked about reactions, 83 per cent of respondents said that the victim should publicly denounce such an abuse “to prevent similar incidents in the future”; 55 per cent believe that they should “punish the perpetrator” and 50 per cent said it should be done “to open a public debate.”

Olympian Sofia Bekatorou recently spoke up about sexual assault she had suffered, opening the floodgates for more allegations of verbal abuse, violence and assault in many sectors of Greek society.
