It’s international film time in Melbourne this week, as the Melbourne International Film Festival launched on Thursday.

Three Greek films have made it into the selection, including a short 10 minute film by Greek Australian director Natalie Cunningham.

Her film, You Know What? I Love You focuses on her 95-year-old grandmother Giannoula Panagiotopoulos and her life as a migrant in Australia.

Through one-on-one conversations between the two, the audience sees a uniquely personal portrayal of a story many migrants can relate to.

“I’m so proud of my yiayia,” Ms Cunningham said. “It’s wonderful that so many are gaining a tiny appreciation of the pivotal role this remarkably strong yet humble woman has played and continues to play in my life.”

Also part of the festival is critically acclaimed The Daughter by writer/director Thanos Anastopoulos. The film is based on the current crisis, following a 14-year-old girl Myrto, who loses her father and finds herself cast adrift in a riot-stricken Athens.

The Capsule, commissioned by art collector Dakis Joannou, is an experimental film about fashion and avant-garde art.

You Know What? I Love You screens before feature length documentary Cutie and the Boxer on Saturday 27 July, 4.00 pm at ACMI Cinemas.

The Daughter is on 27 July at 4.00 pm at Greater Union Cinema 4, 131 Russell St, Melbourne or 29 July at 4.00 pm at ACMI 2, Federation Square.

The Capsule is on 31 July, 4.45 pm, Kino Cinema 2, 45 Collins St, Melbourne or 9 Aug, 6.30 pm, Greater Union Cinema 4, 131 Russell St, Melbourne.
