The Pegasus Dance Academy presented dances from Mytilene as part of the annual ‘Pako Festa’ also known as Geelong’s Multicultural festival.

The dance academy run by Sotiris Sotiriou made their 2021 performance debut after having to close down for eight months due to the pandemic.

“The choice of dances from Mytilene was simply due to the readiness of the group after closing for 8 months due to the pandemic,” Mr Sotiriou told Neos Kosmos.

“Two of our last events in 2020 were the Ouzo Festival and the Festival of the Bull (Tavro) organised by the Palesviaki Enosis of Melbourne and Victoria.”

Many Mytilenean dances have roots from Asia Minor, often characterised by partners facing one another (karsilamades), whilst other dances from the region are danced individually.

Each nationality participating in the festival organised their own events, with the Greek group hosting theirs next to the church, with food, sweets, drinks, music and of course a presentation by the Pegasus Dance Academy.

The Academy looks forward to continuing their dancing endeavours after a successful debut.

“Under this year’s conditions it went quite well,” Mr Sotiriou said.
