Hollywood lead actor George Clooney repeated his 2014 call for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece in a letter to a group of scholars and cultural figures.

According to Greek newspaper Ta Nea, the actor told the chair of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles Janet Suzman that “the Parthenon Sculptures must be returned to their original owner.”

Mr Clooney reportedly went on to tell Ms Suzman that: ““There are indeed many objects of historical value that must be returned to their original owners. However, none of them is as important as the Marbles of the Parthenon.”

It is not the first time that the actor/director had publically called for the return of the friezes thatwere taken from from the Parthenon in 1816 by Lord Elgin and which are currently housed in the British Museum. In 2014, Mr Clooney called for the return of the famous frieze after the release of his film “The Monuments Men” that told the story of a specialised Allied unit which sought the return to their original owners of art works stolen by the Nazis.

His comments drew fire from then mayor of London Boris Johnson who is now prime minister of Britain.

The vice chair of Australians for the Return of the Parthenon Marbles, George Vardas, told Neos Kosmos that: “Our committee welcomes the renewed call by the well-known actor, George Clooney, for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.

“He (Mr Clooney is also married to the prominent international lawyer, Amal Clooney (formerly Alamuddine) who together with the UK-based Australian barrister, Geoffrey Robertson QC, and the late Professor Norman Palmer delivered in 2015 a comprehensive legal advice to the Greek Government making the case for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.

“George Clooney’s voice helps elevate the public profile of the international campaign which is gaining pace, said Mr Vardas.

“Ultimately, however, the campaign for return will depend on the strategies of the Greek Government in engaging with the UK cultural establishment and the British Museum.  Repeated requests for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles up to now have fallen on deaf British ears and whilst it’s heartening to have George Clooney speak up, more needs to be done.”

The founder and chairman of the International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures Organising Committee – Australia, John Comino praised Mr Clooney’s call for the return of the Parthenon Marbles adding that it was important to have the support of well-known people like the famous actor to publicise the issue.

He added that it was also important that there was support given to people within in England who were campaigning for the return of the famous friezes to Greece.
