I send warm greetings to all those celebrating Greek Independence Day –– the bicentenary of the founding of the modern Greek state.

On this national day, I join with you in celebrating this modern chapter in the epic story of your ancient land.

For millennia, Greece has given so much to the world –– in philosophy and democracy, science and architecture, art, sport and culture. A record of achievement that has enriched the world.

Greece is a nation committed to the freedoms and liberties of democracy and equality. These are the values and aspirations that bind Greece to its friends around the world.

Australia has been blessed by the presence of a vast Greek diaspora. Australians of Greek heritage have contributed so much to our nation, bringing energy and enthusiasm to a new life in a new land. From our great cities to our country towns.

From milk bars to fine dining. On screen and on paper. In our boardrooms, courts and parliaments. The men and women of Greek heritage who call Australia home drive our national progress with wisdom and courage.

We share a history and a heritage. We have stood side-by-side in war, and sought the same freedoms in peace. Our ties of blood and family bind us together.

Australia is the most successful and cohesive multicultural country on earth. Our multicultural project is a celebration of humanity. It builds on the goodwill, sacrifice and resilience of generations. The Greek diaspora is a treasured part of that story.

I’m delighted to join with the people of Greece, and their families around the world, as you celebrate this milestone in your nation’s history.

Zito e Ellas!

Prime Minister of Australia

Message from the Governor-General of Australia

Greece and Greek people have shaped our world like few other nations. From ancient times to more modern history, from culture to art to philosophy and more, the impact has been profound.

This is particularly true in Australia. Our nations’ close relationship and friendship is underpinned by the people who call both countries home.

The large number of Greek immigrants in the post-war years helped build our modern Australia. As the years and generations have passed the bond between our countries has only grown stronger.

On behalf of all Australians, I would like to use the occasion of the bicentenary of Greece’s Revolution for Independence to celebrate this bond and to acknowledge the remarkable contribution that Greek Australians make to our local communities and to our nation. In my role I have the opportunity to meet outstanding Australians each and every day. Linda and I are privileged to witness great acts of kindness and compassion and see incredible examples of community spirit and selfless service.

This richness of spirit is evident in the Greek Australian community – it should be recognised and celebrated.

To that end, in this bicentenary year, I encourage you to consider nominating someone from the Greek Australian community for recognition through the Order of Australia. The Order is our nation’s preeminent system through which to recognise achievement and service to the community. Anyone can nominate someone to be considered and all Australians, regardless of their background or field of endeavour, are eligible.

We all know people like this and I need you to nominate them so that we, as a nation, can say well done and thank you.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke offers congratulations on 200th anniversary of Greek Independence

I join with the more than 400,000 Australians of Greek heritage in commemorating the 200th anniversary of Greece’s victory against the Ottoman Empire, and its achievement of Independence.

As the proud first generation son of a Greek migrant mother, this important milestone provides me a unique opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Greek Australians to our great nation.

The history of Greek migration to Australia is closely tied to the War of Independence, with the first Greek settlers arriving in Australia not long after the beginning of the War in 1821. This day allows us to celebrate this rich history, and the significant contributions made by the Greek community.

Whether it be the principles of democracy, freedom and justice, or the works of the ancient Greek philosophers – the contributions of the Greek nation and its culture are forever linked to the development of modern human civilisation.

Even in a year of unprecedented challenges, the Greek community has continued to strive for these ideals – with your strength, resilience and community spirit on full display – something I thank and commend you for.

I extend my best wishes to all Australians commemorating the 200th anniversary of Greek Independence.

Yours sincerely,

Alex Hawke
Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs
