Six images relating to the Battle of Crete will be the themes of this year’s Bakers Finest RSL Anzac Biscuit tins that will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Second World War battle.

The announcement was made in conjunction with the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand the Battle of Crete and Greece and Major League Brands who produce the biscuits. Proceeds from the sale of the biscuit tins will go to the Returned and Services League (RSL) to support its work in helping veterans and their families.

The six images on the biscuit tin show: The city of Chania being bombed by three Stuka aircraft; the German paratrooper invasion of the island; a depiction of a Royal Australian Air Force Spitfire crew including airmen returning from Rethymnon; Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance; the Australian War Memorial in Canberra; and the Anzac Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park.

It is the second time that images on the tins have featured battles in Greece and Crete, the first series appeared in 2017.

The President of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, Tony Tsourdalakis said it was a great honour to have Crete and tis connection to Anzac featured in this year’s commemorative tins.

“This recognition will bring the Anzac connection to Greece into tens of thousands of homes across Australia. This is a great initiative for all of us in raising awareness of the Anzacs in Crete in 1941 and, more generally, for the whole Hellenic community in Australia,” said Mr Tsourdalakis.

He added that his organisation’s national programme of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and New Zealand were still to be announced.

The chairman of the Battle of Crete and Greece Commemorative Council, Jim Papadimitriou said the images were a unique representation of Australia’s role in the Battle of Crete.

The commemorative biscuit tins can be bought from all major Woolworths, Coles and Aldi stores across Australia.
