The legendary point guard, Panagiotis Giannakis, who was one of the key players in Greece’s victory at the FIBA(International Basketball Federation) EuroBasket 1987 final, will be entering the federation’s Hall of Fame.

Mr Giannakis partnered shooting guard Nick Galis in that famous victory and was part of the team that contested the 1989 final of the same tournament. He was part of the Greek Olympic team of 1996 and played 351 times for his country.

In 2006, as coach of the Greek national team, he masterminded Greece’s victory over the United States (101-95) in the 2006 World Cup. The previous year he was at the helm of the national team that won the 2005 Eurobasket competition.

The Class of 2021 (to which Mr Giannakis belongs) was announced on Thursday. It will be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame with the Class of 2020 which was announced on Tuesday. The ceremony will be conducted online on 18 June.
