Created over 2000 years ago, by the same people that introduced the concept of democracy to humanity, the Parthenon immediately became an icon of global citizenship.
Its influence continues in modern times as we see attempts to replicate its stature in famous buildings around the world. The temple of Athena has become a symbol of Eternal Perfection arising out of the marriage of aesthetics and science.
An information evening hosted by the International Organising Committee – Australia – for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles (IOC-A-RPM), is to take place on Friday 11 October, 6:00 pm, at the Ithacan Philanthropic Society, 329 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. The event will be pre-announcing an International Colloquy at the University of Sydney on 15 to 17 November.
Using a number of modern technologies the Sydney Colloquy will give the opportunity to academics, activists and supporters from around the world to discuss the significance of the Parthenon as a global icon and the subsequent 200-year-old cultural property dispute over the separation of the Parthenon Sculptures from the monument.
