Everyone has been going on about the benefits of Greek diet but what is seldom mentioned is that Greek coffee itself has some amazing health benefits for the heart and blood vessels. Rising sales of OASIS Pulverised Greek-style coffee are showing that Australians, as well as the Australian-Greek community, are starting to recognise this fact.

Over the past six months OASIS coffee has experienced a five percent growth said Chris Togias, director of OASIS Coffee.

“Demand continues to grow as foodies and health and wellness seekers join Greek coffee enthusiasts as well as second and third generation Greek-Australians who continue to enjoy Greek coffee culture” said Mr Togias.

“Like the rise of the hibachi grill in kitchens, we love seeing our pulverised coffee being discovered and popularised by “foodies” who enjoy the experience of brewing a coffee with a briki,” he said.

Turkish-American television personality and cardiologist Dr Mehmet Oz emphasized the health benefits and popularity of Greek coffee when he wrote in a recent article for sharecare.com that “… what makes Greek coffee superior to your average cup of Joe is its concentration and preparation, both of which deliver more protective compounds in each little cup.

“Rich in chlorogenic acid, polyphenols, lipid-soluble substances and other heart-healthy compounds, Greek coffee has been shown to help protect the arteries, as well as lower your risk for diabetes and boost overall immune health.

“According to the study, those who drank Greek coffee had healthier blood vessels. What’s more, the new research suggests that Greek coffee protects against endothelial cell dysfunction, a type of heart disease that is particularly lethal to women and is on the rise,” said Dr Oz.

And he does use the word “Greek” and not “Turkish” coffee.

Oasis Pulverised Greek Style Coffee has been a popular staple for Greek coffee drinkers since 1969 when the company was founded by Byron Theofanis.

In 1980, Dennis Patisteas and his older brother, Peter, who ran the Coolibah Restaurant in Melbourne’s historic Southern Cross Hotel decided to enter the coffee business. In 1980, they bought OASIS and were to make full use of the Alecos coffee grinder and roaster that is essential for the large-scale production of the fine pulverized coffee that characterises Greek coffee.

Over the ensuing years, the Patisteas brothers built up the brand. Today the company remains an Australian-owned and family-run business. The directors are Peter Patisteas, the son of Dennis who is now retired, and his brother-in-law, Chris Togias, who run OASIS coffee from Mulgrave in Melbourne as part of Griffiths Bros Coffee Roasters.

OASIS coffee is available at Woolworths, Coles, IGA and Drakes supermarket outlets and Greek delis throughout Australia.
