Five people were injured after a tanker allegedly ploughed into a crowd of people standing on a Southbank pavement in Melbourne.

The B-double tanker injured two of them critically. The driver, aged 64, was arrested after allegedly leaving the scene.

The incident took place at 7pm. Witnesses state that the truck was travelling on City Road, Southbank, and the accident took place as he attempted to turn left onto Power Street.

Victoria Police said, in a statement, that “it appears that while performing the left-hand turn the truck cut the intersection corner and mounted the footpath, taking out the traffic light which fell to the ground.”

Five people believed to all have been in their 20s, a woman and four men, were waiting on the footpath when the truck allegedly hit them, and paramadics say that they all suffered lower-body injuries.

Police allege the driver continued driving, failing to stop. A driver, who saw what happened, allegedly followed the tanker and passed on information that resulted in the police finding him at Truganina, 20 kilometres away.

Police are appealing to anyone who saw the incident or had dashcam footage to come forward.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
