This Saturday was V-day for Archbishop Makarios of Australia who made publicly known he received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Last year, he had joined with other religious leaders in the country sending a joint letter to PM Scott Morrison expressing “ethical concerns” about a potential vaccine against the virus.

But in January, in an interview with Greece’s national broadcaster, ERT, he stated satisfied that the Australian government had secured vaccines not posing moral concerns. At that time, Archbishop Makarios made known his intention to be vaccinated publicly in order to show his confidence in the vaccine.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew had been administered the COVID-19 vaccine in January, with Archbishop Makarios stating on Saturday that he follows the Patriarch’s example and declares his confidence in science and experts’ advice in the battle against the pandemic.

Words of love for Mother’s Day
The Archbishop issued a message addressing the meaning of Mother’s Day celebrated on Sunday 2 May.

“Love that knows no limits or conditions!” reads the translated opening line of the message, with an excerpt focusing on the concept of a mother’s self-selflessness and sacrifice.

“Our mother’s face, regardless of how physically close or far she is, has defined and continues defining our trajectory. Perhaps the reason for this is that by sacrificing her “ego” the mother manages to pass on a part of herself to the children,” Archbishop Makarios says inviting us to fulfill our duty in expressing our love and gratefulness towards her every single day of the year.
