I’ve got love for you if you were born in the 80s (it was a fabulous era and plus I was born in it) but not if you take the new ‘80s makeup trend to the max!

If you haven’t already noticed, eighties inspired makeup is everywhere, from on the catwalks to cosmetic counters. Sure magenta lipstick can look hot, as can tri-coloured eyes in pretty shades of green and blue, but combine them all together along with teased up hair, and you will risk looking like a peacock.

I have one photo of my mum at my christening and it was a make-up disaster (sorry Mum)! It was 1984 and she had short permed hair, blue eye shadow taken up past the crease of her eyelids, and layers of white powder finished with over the top blush and bright red lips. She would have looked gorgeous, had she not drowned herself in cosmetics.

Want to embrace the 80s without looking scary? Try:

  • Teaming purple eye shadow with soft pink or apricot lips. Opt for a shimmery purple shade as matte purple can look too theatrical.
  • For a rainbow eye, work blues, aquas, and greens together, or bronzes and magentas together, not all five. Gold goes with both combinations.
  • Magenta/fuschia lips with a gentle eye- try lining inner part of eye and lower lashline with a shimmery white eyeliner. If you like, finish with a slick of black liquid eyeliner along the top lid.
  • Winged eyeliner is back! Looks great with nude lips for a night out on the town. Run black kohl along the lower lash line, and a liquid liner along the upper lash line, starting with a thin line and getting thicker as you reach the outer corner.
  • If you find your rainbow eye looking too intense, blend, blend, blend! Ensure colours overlap each other, so that your lids don’t look half one colour, and half another.
