Oakleigh Cannons won their third game of the 2009 VPL season defeating Preston Lions 3-0 at Jack Edwards Reserve.

The Cannons had an excellent start to the match, scoring twice in the first five minutes of the match.

Oakleigh took the lead in the first minute through a penalty taken by Ricky Diaco and never looking back.

Diaco extended the lead by scoring a second goal with a header past the Preston defence in the fifth minute.

Oakleigh dominated for long stretches of the match and missed several chances to put the match away.

In the final five minutes of normal time Bill Damianos struck for Oakleigh’s third goal of the match. The early Sunday kick-off saw a crowd of 300 fans  in attendance in a game which was as frienflky on the pitch as the crowd was low key.

The poor attendance can be attributed to fans being forced to pre-purchase tickets for the match because of Oakleigh’s history of trouble when Preston visit the South East.

Oakleigh’s win put the pressure on the top five as the Cannons moved to 9 points after 6 rounds. Preston is yet to win a game and has conceded 15 goals in the past three matches.
