The future of the development of a multi-purpose hall in Alphington Grammar is scheduled to be discussed at tonight’s meeting of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV).

The GOCMV Board will be called to debate a proposal put forward by the President Bill Papastergiadis to secure a planning permit from the City of Yarra.

“As you are aware, the previous Board appealed the Council’s decision to reject the application for a planning permit on the escarpment area beside the river.

The previous Board appealed to VCAT and lost, with a cost of approximately $200,000. The Council had earlier told the Board to relocate the multi purpose hall to another area -other than the escarpment – but this was not accepted by the previous Board,” Mr Papastergiadis highlighted to Neos Kosmos English Edition.

“To get a planning permit for this development it is imperative we work with and not against the Council. A Council has the power to issue a planning permit under the Planning and Environment Act. This project has been on the cards for close to 10 years and we need to get some traction on its development,” the GOCMV President further stressed.

Mr Papastergiadis explained that the Council has indicated its support for granting a planning permit for the multi-purpose hall pending that it is built on another location of Alphington Grammar.

According to GOCMV insiders the former President of the Community George Fountas opposes any alternative sites for the multi-purpose hall other than the one originally suggested.
