An 18-year-old man has been remanded in custody over the fatal stabbing of 20-year-old Phillip Halipilias at Brisbane nightclub, Alexandra Hills Hotel.
Callam Keys, 18, was charged on Thursday with the murder of Mr Halipilias and will reappear in court on July 21.
According to Detective Superintendent Tony Cross who is investigating the case, Mr Halipilias died following an argument last Saturday between two small groups of men.
Police alleged that he was stabbed in the upper body and although paramedics were called to the scene, they were unable to revive him.
Mr Halipilias and his parents, Sophie and Steve, and brother Spiro, only moved from Melbourne 18 months ago.
His family described him as cheeky, honest and fun-loving, and someone who loved music and dancing. Spiro Halipilias said of his younger brother that “there’s always been scuffles and fist-fights but I never felt in danger when I was with my brother.Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there for him this time.”
Halipilias’ father called for the introduction of metal detectors, not just at the Alexandra Hills Hotel, but all venues which were known for unruly patrons. “I honestly believe there should be something done about it,” he said.
“Why can you bring weapons into a place you go to? Who would want to have what happened to Phil to happen to someone else?”
Alexandra Hills Hotel owner Tom McGuire said that if metal detectors were deemed necessary, he would introduce them.
