Greece’s environment ministry will construct barriers and make use of electrified wire along the Egnatia freeway in northern Greece to prevent cars killing the local brown bears.

Environment Minister George Souflias announced the measures following a number of deaths of the endangered species on the Egnatia freeway, which criss-crosses much of the mountainous Pindus range of northwest Greece.

Souflias said that until the fences and wires are set up there is to be a constant monitoring of cars whose flashlights scare the bears near the side of the road.
