American rockers Faith No More are scheduled to perform a gig in Athens today as part of their much anticipated reunion tour The Second Coming Tour (or Reunion Tour).

With their fusion of heavy metal, funk, hip-hop, and progressive rock, Faith No More has earned a substantial cult following.

By the time they recorded their first album in 1985, the band had already had a string of lead vocalists, including Courtney Love; their debut, We Care a Lot, featured Chuck Mosley’s abrasive vocals but was driven by Jim Martin’s metallic guitar.

Faith No More’s next album, 1987’s Introduce Yourself, was a cohesive and impressive effort; for the first time, the rap and metal elements didn’t sound like they were fighting each other.

Faith No More is best known for combining elements from many genres including heavy metal, funk, progressive rock, hip hop and jazz.

Break-up rumours began circling Faith No More in early 1998 when the band’s newsgroup claimed lead singer Mike Patton had quit in favour of side projects.

Although denied at the time, the rumour proved to be partly true.

Faith No More went on to play their final show together in Portugal on April 7, 1998.

On February 24, the group announced that they would be reforming for a special European tour.

The Reunion Tour features the original line up of band members from before they split more than 11 years ago.

Their first performance together since the bust was in June when they played at the Brixton Academy in London.

Just last month their massive single Italic came in at number 46 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 of All Time Countdown.

They had planned to support Aerosmith at the time, but subsequently cancelled these plans.

Soon after, bassist Billy Gould began circulating the following email and fax: “After 15 long and fruitful years, Faith No More have decided to put an end to speculation regarding their imminent break up… by breaking up.

“The decision among the members is mutual, and there will be no pointing of fingers, no naming of names, other than stating, for the record, that “Puffy started it”.

“Furthermore, the split will now enable each member to pursue his individual project(s) unhindered. Lastly, and most importantly, the band would like to thank all of those fans and associates that have stuck with and supported the band throughout its history”.

Lead singer (and massive heartthrob) Mike Patton went on to form his own record label and returned to work with his previous before Faith No More called Mr. Bungle.

But now, 11 years on, the group has reunited. After some speculation, the band announced on their website that they would be playing in Athens on August 10.

It took some time for any Greek organisers to confirm the concert, however eventually it was established that Faith No More would play in South Athens at Theatro Vrachon Vyrona.
