Local State Member of Parliament for Oakleigh, Ann Barker, presented the President of the Greek Orthodox Community of Oakleigh, Angelos Sardellis, and Principal of Oakleigh Greek Orthodox College, Steve Charisis, with a cheque for $4400 from the State Government two Thursdays ago at the college.

The Brumby Government funding, provided through the Victorian Multicultural Commission, will help fund the community’s Sts Anargyri Feast Day celebration that will be held at the Oakleigh Greek Orthodox College grounds later this year on November 1.

“The Sts Anargyri Feast Day celebrations held by the community each November and July are important local celebrations and I am very pleased to be able to support this year’s event by providing extra funding to boost the celebrations,” Member for Oakleigh Ann Barker said.

In the latest round of the Brumby Government’s Community Grants Program, 62 multicultural community groups from across Oakleigh, Clayton, Caulfield, Mt Waverley and Malvern will share in almost $200,000 in grants to promote and support multicultural diversity and harmony.

“This funding is being used by community groups for educational activities, social events and to encourage interaction across cultures and generations that bring together different faith and community groups to promote harmony, celebrate shared values and increase understanding of, and respect for, our differences,” Ann Barker said.

“The celebrations organised by the Greek Orthodox Community of Oakleigh and District are always fantastic and already there is great anticipation in the community about this year’s celebrations which I believe will be in keeping with, and possibly exceeding, the great success of previous celebrations,” she added.
