Greece’s horror World Cup Qualifying patch continued after being held to a 1-1 draw away to Moldova.
Theofanis Gekas’ opening goal was cancelled out in the 91st minute by the hosts.
The draw leaves Greece second in the table on equal points with Latvia, three points behind Switzerland with two games remaining in Group 2.
Greece had a lion’s share of possession, many clear cut chances but no finishing prowess. After last weekend’s unlucky loss to Switzerland, the draw at Moldova is a devastating result, leaving Otto Rehaggle and his men with a mountain to climb if they are to get to the South African World Cup.
The visitors enjoyed a brighter start with Angelos Charisteas close to scoring on 19 minutes after beating three defenders, while Gekas hit the post from a Georgios Samaras cross.
Greece did eventually forge ahead, though, when Stanislav Namasco was only able to parry a Samaras effort and Gekas converted the rebound.
Greece only looked like adding to their lead just before the interval, when Giorgos Karagounis looked to put his side further in front with his free-kick effort, but the Moldovan wall was alert to keep out his well-hit shot.
Immediately after the restart, Katsouranis combined with Gekas but his strong shot was sent into the side netting.
Another Gekas header was parried away for a corner, and Greece were beginning to feel the pressure from missed opportunities.
Moldova proved more threatening after the break, Serghei Lascencov going close from a free-kick and Valeriu Catinsus hitting an upright, but they appeared to be destined to come away empty-handed until Victor Bulat crossed and Andronic unleashed a powerful header into the roof of the net, leaving second-placed Greece level with Latvia on 14 points.
Each side has two matches remaining, with some interesting match-ups. Greece play Latvia at home on October 10, while Switzerland is away to Luxembourg.
Just four days later, Greece hosts Luxembourg, already eliminated, Latvia is at home to bottom-place Moldova while Switzerland takes on Israel at home.
