Olympiakos notched up their first win under the guidance of Zico, beating AEK 2-1 at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday night.

The home side was left complaining about the refereeing after a blatant handball on the goal-line in the first half by Olympiakos defender Olof Mellberg went unpunished.

AEK also had the lion’s share of the early play squandering at least two early chances to take the lead.

A powerful shot by Nacho Scocco in the second minute went just wide before Antonis Nikopolidis made a one-hand save to a header by Ismael Blanco five minutes later.

The host missed another major chance in the 34th when a long-range shot by Blanco hit Olympiakos’ crossbar.

Olympiakos opened the scoring against the run of play when one its rare attacks bore results.

Vassilis Torosidis scored in the 44th minute when he jumped high among three AEK defenders to head home a cross from defender Leonardo for his third goal of the season.

A shot by Diogo went just wide in the 52nd, two minutes before Torossidis doubled the lead for the visitors in the 55th minute with a long lob when he spotted goalkeeper Sebastian Saja out of position.

Nemeth narrowed the difference off a cross by Scocco in the 65th, which set up a frantic finale during which both sides missed chances and Olympiakos came close to making the score 3-1 when a shot by Michal Zewlakow hit Saha’s post.

The result did not do justice to AEK’s performance and Dusan Bajevic will wonder how his team lost the game after making 13 attempts on goal to Olympiakos’ five.
Panionios played to a scoreless draw against visiting PAOK.

Both games were postponed from the league’s opening round on Augus 23 because of large wildfires on the outskirts of Athens.
