The saga that is the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria elections continues as the two opposing factions gear up for election day on Sunday.

With less than four days to go Neos Kosmos sources suggest that several key players in GOCMV affairs are  likely to resort to the courts to test the legitimacy of the election results and the electoral process.

The  release of a notice announcing an Extraordinary General Meeting on February 7 by the 120 GOCMV members who had submitted a petition to the GOCMV last week has further complicated the elections.

The petition had asked for a repeat of the Annual General Meeting and Extraordinary General Meeting that were held on November 22.

The 120 members argue that provisions of the Corporations Act allows them to hold the meeting because the  GOCMV has ignored their petition.

Their original petition is scheduled to be discussed by the GOCMV Board on Friday.

However the GOCMV President, Bill Papastergiadis has previously stressed that their demand will only be considered by the Board elected at the upcoming elections and that the elections cannot be postponed or further deferred.

The Electoral Committee officially announced yesterday that elections are going ahead on Sunday.

However the Electoral Commitee itself has been rocked by the resignation of three members, citing concerns about the way the elections were unfolding and because of questions about the legality of their appointment.

The three members had been appointed to the Committe after a compromise reached betweeen the two factions as a result of legal action.

Meanwhile, the opposition faction “Community Transparency” led by Treasurer Con Dikeos officially launched today their website where visitors may be informed of their policies and plans.

The ruling faction Koinotiki Ananeosi (renewal) led by President Bill Papastergiadis is hopeful of securing a clear victory on Sunday and as he stated to Neos Kosmos: “We hope that the members will entrust us with their vote so we can promote our major projects that we have planned for the Community and for our daily school, Alphington Grammar.”
