Alphington Grammar School took the first steps towards its redevelopment last week as the first sod was turned on two major projects.

The first is a multi-purpose hall for which the school was successful in applying and receiving a $480,000 capital grant from the Federal Government.

The hall will feature an international-sized basketball court, netball and volleyball courts, a theatre studies area with a stage, music and instrumental classrooms, staff accommodation, a covered outdoor recreation area and a canteen. The new hall will provide a fantastic new space for student performances and large school functions.

The second project is a new complex of primary school classrooms, funded partially by a $2 million grant under the federal government’s Building the Education Revolution program.

The new primary classrooms complex will allow for the replacement of four portable classrooms currently in use.

The complex will also provide space for a common specialty learning area.

Overall, the projects will cost a combined total of $6.4 million dollars, government funding supported by a generous $300,000 donation by the Andrianakos family towards the multi-purpose hall.

The primary classrooms complex is due to be completed by the end of 2010, while the multi-purpose hall will be ready for use by February, 2011.
