While many people complain that commercialism has swallowed the spirit of Christmas, the Greek Welfare Centre at the Holy Monastery of Axion Estin in Northcote is reversing the consumerist trend.

Churches around Melbourne and Australia are collecting non-perishable food and toys to distribute to the needy for Christmas.

A spokesperson said they have more than enough volunteers, and they’re calling for more nonperishable food and toys.

Distribution will begin next week.
