Microsoft is reportedly aiming to push Apple’s worldwide iPad market share to under 50 per cent by mid 2013 with Windows 8 tablets, Digitimes reports.

The same report says Microsoft expects 32 Windows 8-based tablets this year alone. Dell, HP and Acer are among the brands Microsoft have taken under its wing to help them release their tablets by the end of 2012.

To date, Apple holds over 60 per cent of the tablet space, and both Microsoft and Google are struggling to match the iPad’s perceived value, despite being emerging contenders in the market.
There is still hope for the iPad’s competitors however, as Apple used to own 87 per cent of the tablet market, which indicated how even struggling competitors who can’t match the iPad’s mammoth sales figures can dilute market share with their alternative offerings.
