A diet made consisting of low-fat and non-fat foods may harm conception and also lead to infertility issues in both men and women, says natural fertility expert Dr Natalie Kringoudis.

Dr Kringoudis said that hormones needed to conceive are made up of natural fats and proteins and by eating a diet high in low fat or non-fat foods you may potentially be denying your body of natural fats needed to conceive.

“When you make a food low fat you are taking out the fat and you have to replace it with something else and usually that’s sugar or something that’s not a natural substance to make it an actual food again,” Dr Kringoudis tells Neos Kosmos.

“So when you do that you remove a lot of the nutritional elements so our body is not getting what it needs, so our body will continue to crave more food because nutritionally its not getting what it needs. But if you are fuelling it with the right fats, proteins and carbohydrates, your body will be satisfied with small amounts of food.”

In her latest book Eat Fat, Be Thin that she co-authored with Andi Lew, the two have collaborated ideas and practices needed for people to reach their fertility goals. The book features information, recipe tips on different types of fat and what fats are essential and what your body needs nutritionally.

“It really teaches people how to rethink the whole low fat and no fat concept and how that can be quite dangerous when it comes to a healthy body and reintroducing the therapeutic fats – avocados, nuts and seeds – in a good way,” she says.

She said apart from diet, lifestyle plays a big part in natural conception so looking into things such as sleep, exercise and spending quality time with your partner will also benefit in trying to get pregnant.

Eat Fat, Be Thin is available in all good book stores. RRP $24.95 and e-book $12.95. For further information on Dr Natalie Kingoudis visit www.thepagodatree.com.au
