The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in the United States announced 84 new members and 21 foreign associates this week, four of which are of Greek origin.

Coming on board as members are Computer Science Professor Mihalis Yannakakis from Columbia University, and Northwestern University’s Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Vicky (Vassiliki) Kalogera.

“I feel deeply honoured, as this is a distinction beyond any expectation. I really needed some time to assimilate that it was real,” Professor Kalogera told ANA-MPA.

Meanwhile director of the Archaeological Sciences Laboratory at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Panagiotis Karkanas, and Economic Theory and Policy Professor Anastasios Xepapadeas from Athens University of Economics and Business were selected to come on board as foreign associates.

The prestigious institution makes its selections based on an individual’s contributions over the years to their respective fields, with all of the aforementioned having an impressive track record.
