Following the 6.4 Richter scale tremor that hit the Ionian island of Zakynthos, a landslide at one of its most famous beaches has resulted in a change in the colour of the waters.

Zante’s most popular beach, Navagio (which means Shipwreck in English), went from clear turquoise to white as white rocks from the adjacent cliff have fallen into the waters.

The earthquake has also affected the safety of the beach which normally attracts more than one million visitors per year.

Greece’s Organization of Earthquake Planning and Protection (OASP) has inspected the site and its chair, professor of geology Efthymios Lekkas, has advised the establishment of traffic zones on the beach surrounding the shipwreck that will only allow vessels and visitors to access areas of the beach that have been cleared as safe.

OASP also recommends cutting down the number of visitors allowed on the beach per session as it is not yet clear how safe it is near the cliffs or how the rocks have changed the bottom of the waters.
