Nick Kyrgios has had an eventful year to say the least.

The 24-year-old is currently back on Australian soil after receiving a 16-week suspended ban and fine for his behaviour at the Western & Southern Open in August for verbally abusing an umpire and smashing two rackets during an unpermitted bathroom break.

Playing on this, the communications team behind start-up sport Pickleball, have had some fun with the tennis star, sending him a cheeky invite to take part in the 2019 Australian Pickleball Championship in Brisbane during his down time.

“We notice with great interest you are back in Australia to deal with your injuries and no doubt digest the ATP’s disciplinary findings,” reads the letter addressed to Kyrgios from Pickleball Australia.

“Let’s us say straight up we are huge fans of yours and can’t wait until you are back on court doing what you do best.

“In the meantime, we have a proposal to put to you.

“Seeing as though you are free, why not come and play in the 2019 Australian Pickleball Championship in Brisbane next month?

Tournament spokesman, Nigel Wood has confirmed the invite was genuine, with the sport attracting the likes of tennis champion Pat Cash, among others.

“Nick’s had an eventful year and we think he’d enjoy playing in a tournament like this where the emphasis is on having a good time,” Mr Wood told Sporting News Australia.

“He won’t find things as strict with us as he does with the ATP.

“Pickleball is really taking off and this is Nick’s chance to get in at the ground floor.”

Pickleball kicked off two years ago with 20 players, and now have over 1,000 registered participants. It is a combination of tennis, badminton and table tennis, and is played on a small court.

The Australian Pickleball Championships are being held at Mt Gravatt, Brisbane from 5-6 October.
